The number of 5G-capable mobile phones sold in Japan amounted to about nine million in fiscal year 2020. It was forecast that the number would increase to almost 27.4 million by fiscal year 2024 and then decrease again slightly. 5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for mobile networks. Japan's major mobile carriers started the rollout of their 5G networks in March 2020.
