With a long-term global horizontal irradiation (GHI) of nearly six kilowatt hours per m² per day, El Salvador was the Latin American country with the largest theoretical solar photovoltaic potential in 2020. Within South America, Chile led the ranking, with a GHI of 5.76 kilowatt hours per m². Figures represent the sum of direct and diffuse solar irradiation components received by a horizontal surface, but do not consider other environmental conditions or a specific power plant design and mode of operation. Meanwhile, the Andean country also had the largest average solar PV practical potential in the Latin American region.
Global horizontal radiation (GHI) in Latin America and the Caribbean as of 2020, by country
(in kilowatt hours per square meter per day)
According to the source, global horizontal irradiation (GHI) is the long-term amount of solar resource available on a horizontal surface on Earth. Figures represent the average for the country territory.
