As of 2020, accommodation and food services added 491 billion Tanzanian shillings (around 211.8 million U.S. dollars) to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Zanzibar. The amount declined from 562.7 billion Tanzanian shillings (242.7 U.S. dollars) in the previous year, indicating the impact of the coronavirus /COVID-19) pandemic in the tourism sector. Despite the fall, accommodation and food services had one of the highest participation in Zanzibar's economy in comparison to other activities.
