Emissions fell by roughly three percent in the first half of 2020 in China due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the country started to emerge from lockdowns, heavy industry recovered and emissions surged by four percent in the second half of the year. Therefore, despite the economic devastation caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, carbon dioxide emissions in China increased by 1.5 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.
China was the first country to be impacted by the virus, and in February 2020 energy-related emissions were 12 percent lower than in February 2019. While emissions levels worldwide remained below pre-pandemic levels for the majority of the year, levels in China had recovered by April 2020, and were seven percent higher than pre-pandemic levels in December.
