Based on this model, the finance and insurance sector have both the greatest effective potential and theoretical maximum for remote work in the United States in 2020. In theory, work that includes information gathering, coding data, or teaching and counseling can be done remotely. It should be noted that some tasks that do not necessarily require on-premise presence are still more effectively done in person, such as providing advice and feedback or negotiating decisions. In general, physical activities cannot be done remotely as they require use of fixed equipment, for example. More specifically, these include providing care or using lab equipment.
Model for potential share of time spent working remotely in the United States in 2020, by sector
*Effective potential means no productivity loss. This means only activities that can be done remotely without losing effectiveness are included. The theoretical maximum includes activities that do not require physical presence on-site.
**The model is based on 2,000 activities across 800+ occupations.
