The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates Texas' electricity grid, came perilously close to a complete system blackout in February 2021. The Texas power crisis saw power generation fall by 48.6 percent in the night between February 14 and February 15. Over 350 power generators were forced offline due to winter storm Uri and the resulting drop in temperatures, which caused power plant equipment and water for thermal power generation to freeze. The predicted winter peak as of September 2020 was 57,699 megawatts. ERCOT's operating system ran below a frequency of 59.4 hertz for roughly four minutes, five minutes short of risking a complete system blackout.
