Production of citrus fruits in Morocco 2010-2021

Citrus crops represent one of the major components of the Moroccan fruit market. In 2021, 2.35 million metric tons of citrus fruits were produced in the country, compared to a total fruit output of around 6.5 million metric tons.

Domestic consumption

Citrus fruits produced in the country include oranges, lemons, and limes. Tangerines and mandarins were estimated to dominate citrus fruits production in the country in recent years, reaching a volume of around 900,000 metric tons in the 2022/2023 marketing year. However, the leading citrus fruits in terms of domestic consumption were oranges. 663,000 metric tons of the latter were consumed locally in the 2019/2020 marketing year, and some 900,000 metric tons of it were expected to be consumed domestically in 2020/2021.

Exports

In general, edible fruits and nuts exported from Morocco reached an approximate value of 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, and Spain was the country’s leading trade partner. As of the 2019/2020 trade year, around 665 thousand metric tons of citrus fruits were exported from Morocco. Tangerines and mandarins were the most exported, at a volume of 397 thousand metric tons.
