Coal energy consumption in South Africa 2005-2021
In 2021, the total coal energy consumption in South Africa was measured at 3.85 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu). During the period under review, the consumption of energy from coal ranged between 3.72 quadrillion Btu in 2018 and 4.12 quadrillion Btu in 2019. Moreover, as of 2021, some 71 percent of the total energy consumed was generated from coal. By the same year, the total energy production from coal in South Africa reached 4.98 quadrillion Btu.
