The public spending on the job market includes public employment services (PES), training, hiring subsidies, job creations in the public sector, as well as unemployment benefits. Compared to the period from 2007 to 2019, the spending drastically increased in 2020, following the consequences brought in by the Coronavirus pandemic. In Italy, the total social expenditure amounts to 28.2 percent of the country's GDP, some of the highest among the OECD countries.
