The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic caused major income disruption worldwide and raised concerns about the ability of mortgage borrowers to repay their housing loans. In Australia, many mortgage providers have introduced temporary relief to borrowers struggling because of the pandemic. In October 2020, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which is one of the largest mortgage lenders in the country, granted deferrals to four percent of housing loans outstanding. One year later, as of October 2021, the share of deferrals was 0.6 percent.
