There is an employment gender gap among the countries of the European Union. Men are employed full-time to a higher degree than women, regardless of age group. Among the 25 to 49 year olds, 84 percent of males were employed, compared to 65 percent of the EU females. According to the Gender Equality Index 2020, Sweden was the most equal country among the 28 countries of the European Union that year.

The Gender Equality Index is a tool to measure the progress of gender equality in the EU, developed by EIGE. It gives more visibility to areas that need improvement and ultimately supports policy makers to design more effective gender equality measures.
