In fiscal year 2015, the rail freight traffic in India was around 0.65 million metric ton-kilometers and this freight movement was expected to remain stagnant until 2017. The rail freight traffic had doubled during the observed time frame. There was a continuous increase in the average cost of freight transportation by rail.
