In 2021, the battery capacity of new all-electric vehicles that joined the U.S. fleet came to a total of around 33.4 gigawatts. This figure had risen significantly between 2011 and 2021, primarily through an increase in annual battery-electric vehicle sales. While the energy consumption of the battery-powered vehicle fleet increases the demand for electricity, the capacity of vehicle batteries also presents a form of energy storage.
