In fiscal year 2021, around 5.3 million tons of vegetables were traded at central wholesale markets in Japan. This represented a decade-low.
Central wholesale markets refer to wholesale markets operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in Japan. One of the most successful central markets was the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, which was the largest wholesale market for fish and seafood in the country prior to its closure and relocation.
