In fiscal year 2020, around 160 thousand tons of beef were traded at wholesale markets in Japan. This represented a decrease from about 178 thousand tons in fiscal 2011. The share of beef passing through wholesale markets declined steadily in previous years, reaching a decade low in fiscal year 2019.
