Import volume of coal from Australia to Japan FY 2000-2020
In the fiscal year 2020, Japan imported approximately 104.2 million metric tons of coal from Australia. Despite a slight decrease in amount compared to the previous fiscal years, Australia remained the largest supplier of coal to Japan.
Since Japan lacks domestic reserves of fossil fuels, it is heavily dependent on imports. Therefore, the Japanese government currently aims to replace fossil fuels with nuclear and renewable energy sources.
