In the fiscal year 2020, the import volume of thermal coal, also known as steam coal, amounted to around 105.2 million metric tons, making up the largest import volume of all coal types to Japan.
Since the country lacks domestic reserves of fossil fuels, it is heavily dependent on imports. Therefore, the Japanese government currently aims to replace fossil fuels with nuclear and renewable energy sources.
