In 2019, China's Food and Drug Administration granted approvals to 56 drugs, of which 16 were biologic medicines and 40 were chemical medicines. The regulatory changes in drug approval in 2017 had facilitated new drug development in China significantly.

Biologics include vaccines, but exclude biosimilars. Biologic, or a biologic medical product, refers to any pharmaceutical product manufactured in, extracted from, or semi-synthesized from biological sources. A drug is technically defined as a chemical substance that interacts with proteins in the body.
