The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the museum sector hard in 2020 and 2021, with many institutions across the globe having to be close to the public for long periods. According to a May 2021 survey, nearly half of surveyed museum employees and governance worldwide were concerned about reducing public exhibitions due to the economic impact of the health crisis. Meanwhile, roughly 44 percent of respondents expressed concern about suspending freelance or temporary contracts.
