In 2020, the military spending amounted to 0.63 percent of the gross domestic product, showing an increase compared to the previous year. Countries worldwide spend on average 2.2 percent of their GDP on defense. The highest military spending in proportion to GDP is recorded by Saudi Arabia and Israel. In absolute value, the United States and China are the countries with the highest military spending in the world.

Such expenditures include military and civil personnel, including retirement pensions of military personnel and social services for personnel; operation and maintenance; procurement; military research and development; and military aid (in the military expenditures of the donor country).
