Broadcasting hours of reality TV programs in France 2010-2019

Reality TV arrived on the small French screens nearly twenty years ago, at the beginning of the millennium. Thanks to the impressive success of programs such as Big Brother, French programs such as Loft Story or Secret Story have brought thousands of viewers together daily. Since 2010, the number of hours broadcast has exploded, reaching its peak in 2017 before decreasing slightly.

Cohabitation reality TV is one of the most popular forms of reality TV and accounts for nearly one-third of the hours of reality TV programs broadcast on television. In these programs, a group of individuals live together in an isolated location and participate in tests or competitions, most often to progressively eliminate candidates. Les Anges de la téléréalité and its spinoffs, a program that brings together already-established reality TV celebrities, was by far the most popular show of its kind of the decade.

A highly competitive market

To meet viewers' growing demand for reality TV, the television channels have shown ingenuity by regularly offering new programs. The public channels M6 and TF1 are the leading providers of reality TV programs on French television, including talent shows, makeovers, coaching, dating, home renovation and decoration, and scripted reality shows. As for cohabitation reality TV, the NRJ 12 channel broadcasts more than half of this type of program from 2010 to 2019.
