In 2022, global transportation carbon dioxide emissions increased 3.23 percent year-on-year to roughly eight billion metric tons (GtCO₂). In 2020, transportation emissions plummeted more than 14 percent from 2019 levels as a result of strict COVID-19-related lockdowns and restrictions, but rebounded almost 10 percent the following year.
The power sector also recorded significant emissions reductions in 2020, at 3.6 percent, but they have increased annually since.
