Among the listed means of public and shared transportation, taxis accounted for the largest fleet in Moscow, with an expected volume of 195 thousand cars to be reached by 2023. All in all, an increase in figures is planned by Moscow Transport Department for all means of transportation over the coming years.
Major taxi and ride-hailing service providers
The unique national characteristics of the Russian shared mobility market include the de-facto monopoly of Yandex.Taxi, the bounding necessity for taxi drivers to rent a vehicle from a licensed company's fleet, and the prevalence of cash as the payment method. In 2018, Yandex acquired local Uber operators, therefore marginalized the rest of the competitors. The only challenger left in the market was Citymobil, a taxi aggregator founded by Mail.ru Group in 2007. As of April 2020, Yandex.Taxi was the market leader accounting for 63 percent of total rides in Moscow, while Citymobil made up nearly one-third of the market. Due to the pandemic and the self-isolation measures implemented by the government in March 2020, the growing volume of ride-hailing rides in Russia dropped significantly.
Russian taxi and ride-hailing market outlook
Russia is the fourth-largest market in the global ride-on-demand scene in terms of taxi and carpool app downloads. However, the country's ride-hailing sector is still steadily growing. In 2020, it accounted for nearly six billion U.S. dollars in revenues which is set to grow up to 11.3 billion U.S. dollars by 2025. The number of car-sharing rides within the country amounted to 70 million in the same year, leading to the projected development of the car park. By 2024, in Moscow only, nearly 50 thousand car-sharing vehicles are expected to be registered, while in Saint Petersburg, the estimated number is about 13.1 thousand.
