In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic caused stay-at-home measures to be put in place across the globe. This combined with many non-essential establishments, such as cinemas, theaters, and gyms, being required to close meant that the public were left with more restricted recreation options. In the United States, a survey showed that as of July 2020 the activity that increased the most as a result of the pandemic was cooking, with 49 percent of respondents saying they have participated in this activity more during the crisis. Watching more TV programs and reading more were also high up on the list, with 39 percent and 34 percent of respondents respectively stating they had increased doing these things.
