FDI value in financial intermediation and insurance sector in Romania 2009-2019

The value of foreign direct investments in the financial intermediation and insurance sector in Romania variated from 2009 to 2019. FDI peaked in 2012 at 10.9 billion euros and slightly dropped to 10.1 billion euros by 2019. In other words, foreign direct investments in the financial intermediation and insurance sector accounted for 11.5 percent of the total FDI stock in 2019.

FDI stock in the industry sector

Romania is known for its developed and powerful industrial market, which is why in 2019 this sector, specifically manufacturing, attracted the highest amount of foreign direct investments, followed by constructions and real estate. The most important manufacturing sub-sectors were transport equipment and oil processing, chemical, rubber, and plastic products, each accounting for at least 20 percent of the FDI stock in the manufacturing sector. Moreover, tangible and intangible fixed assets of FDI in the industry branch were worth over 20 billion euros.

COVID-19 impact

According to a survey conducted by EY among foreign investors in Romania, the majority of them believed that the country’s attractiveness to foreign investments would totally improve in the next three years, especially after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has passed. At the same time, in order to improve Romania’s attractiveness for foreign investors, survey participants believed that the country should concentrate its efforts to developing education and skills, as well as to supporting high technology and innovation industries.
