The James H. Miller Jr. Electric Generating Plant in Alabama is the largest carbon dioxide emitter in the United States. Since 2009, the Miller Plant has emitted more than 240 million metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Over the past decade, the most polluting power plants in the U.S. have pumped millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. These emissions are mainly from the combustion of coal, which is the most polluting energy source.
The United States is one of the largest emitters of CO2 from coal use worldwide, though emissions from this fuel source have been in decline for a number of years.
