The public broadcaster Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) counted approximately 22.7 million satellite broadcasting subscribers in Japan in 2021. Satellite broadcasting subscribers have contracts that allow for the reception of broadcasting by both satellite-based and terrestrial systems. A comparison by type of contract shows that subscribers with this type of contract made up the largest group among NHK broadcasting subscribers during that year. NHK was founded in 1926 and re-established as a public broadcaster following a new broadcast law in 1950.
