Most popular online news brands in Hungary 2023

As of 2023, index.hu was the most widely used online news source in Hungary, reaching 35 percent of respondents on a weekly basis. A further 34 percent of survey participants consumed news from 24.hu weekly, making it second in the ranking.

Ways of accessing online news

According to the findings of a survey conducted in 2022, over half of Hungarians read the news articles that appeared on their social networks, making it the leading source of online news. At the same time, nearly 30 percent of the respondents informed themselves using news aggregator websites or applications. Most of the population exclusively used freely available online news sources and only five percent of Hungarians had paid for a digital subscription as of 2022.

And who earns the most from this? Mediaworks Hungary Zrt., the publisher of Origo and Bors just to mention a few, is one of the leading newspaper publishing companies in Hungary, recording the highest revenue in 2021 at almost 50 billion forints. It was followed by Central Médiacsoport, the publisher of nlc, Nosalty, and 24.hu, with a revenue of over 13 billion forints.
