Aldi in Germany
Aldi split in Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord back in the 1960s. These are two separate companies, each of which oversees their own branches in Germany. Süd and Nord literally refer to the locations, with the Süd stores situated across southern Germany and the Nord retailers in the north of the country. Aldi’s success story has spread beyond Germany, with Aldi Nord operating in Poland and Denmark, among other European countries. Aldi Süd has even opened stores in the U.S. and Australia. Based on recent figures, Aldi had in total over 4,000 stores in Germany. The total revenue generated in 2019 amounted to 29.5 billion euros. Aldi Süd recorded higher figures than Aldi Nord. One of Aldi’s main discounter competitors is Lidl, which is confirmed by various rankings showing how the companies trade places in terms of who is on the first rung of the ladder.
Budget and shopping frequency
The largest share of Aldi customers had a monthly net income of 1,000 to 1,500 euros. Most shopped for groceries several times a week, though not necessarily at Aldi.
