China is the largest producer of coal emissions by far, having released 8,550 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) from coal combustion in 2023. The United States was the largest coal polluter worldwide up until 1985, but emissions there have been in decline since 2005. Meanwhile, coal emissions in China have soared due to rising coal consumption. Coal emissions in India have also been rising rapidly, and since 2015 the country has been the second-largest coal polluter globally.
