CO₂ emissions from coal use in China 1960-2023

Coal use in China released 8.55 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2023. This accounted for more than 70 percent of the total emissions in China that year.

Although coal emissions in China have been increasing for a number of decades, they began to climb more rapidly at the turn of the century. This coincides with the increased consumption of coal in China and the country's rapid economic growth.
