Between 1960 and 1987, emissions from coal use in Poland climbed to a high of 395 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂). Since then, emissions from burning coal have been in decline and dropped to 175 MtCO₂ in 2022. Poland is reliant on coal energy and is home to a number of the most polluting power plants in Europe, such as the Bełchatów lignite-fired power plant.
