Carbon dioxide emissions from coal use in Germany have fallen considerably since 1960, a year in which 700 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) were released. By 1990, coal emissions in Germany had dropped 20 percent to 569 MtCO₂. In the following decades, a transition towards renewable energy and a reduction in coal use saw German coal emissions fall even further, and by 2022 they had dropped to below 250 MtCO₂. Despite these substantial reductions, Germany remains one of the largest polluters from coal combustion.
