The sales value of dairy products certified as "foods for specified health uses" (FOSHU) in Japan amounted to around 312 billion Japanese yen in the fiscal year 2020. Non-alcoholic beverages and dairy products were the largest product groups marketed for their health benefits.
The FOSHU label designates food products with scientifically recognized health-promoting effects. Products bearing the label received the government's approval to be promoted with such health claims.
