U.S. adult opinions on paying reparations to slave descendants in 2019 by politics
In a 2019 survey, 33 percent of Democrats in the U.S. strongly supported the idea of paying financial reparations to U.S. citizens descended from slaves, while 58 percent of Republicans were strongly opposed the idea. When figures are combined, 60 percent of Democrats supported the idea, while 25 percent opposed; in comparison, 22 percent of Republican respondents supported the idea while 67 percent opposed. Responses from those affiliated with independent candidates or other political parties generally fell somewhere between responses from those affiliated with major parties.
