In 2022, nearly 327,000 new medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles in Europe were running on diesel. Unquestionably the most commonly used fuel type in this segment, diesel represented around 96 percent of the market that same year.
A slow shift away from diesel
While the market share of diesel dwarfs that of other fuels, including petrol, a slow shift towards alternative fuels can be observed. This is in part due to the fact that more alternatively-powered trucks are becoming available. From 2019 to 2020, registrations of trucks using alternative fuels went from 7,300 units to some 10,300 units. While electrically-chargeable vehicles continue to have a very small share of the market, registrations in this segment went up by 90 percent in 2022. Europe's largest market, the European Union, aims to decrease CO2 emissions throughout the EU.
Market for hybrid vehicles stagnates
Demand for hybrid medium and heavy commercial vehicles slumped between 2021 and 2022. The number of newly registered units dropped by almost 63 percent in Italy. In some countries like Czechia, Poland, Spain and France, registrations of hybrid vehicles fell by 100 percent. Concurrently, Netherlands and Ireland saw an increase in registrations for new electrically-powered trucks.
