According to the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) in 2018, teachers employed at elementary schools in Japan worked for around 56 hours per week on average. This was the longest of all 48 surveyed countries. That year, the average work hours of teachers of all 48 surveyed countries amounted to approximately 38.3 hours.

Figures are based on the survey results of the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) conducted in 2018 that surveyed 260,000 teachers in 15,000 schools across 48 countries and economies.
