A study that analyzed 148,966 emergency departments (ED) visits for opioid overdose in the United States that occured between August 4, 2019 and April 3, 2021 found that in only 7.4 percent of cases were patients prescribed naloxone within 30 days of their ED visit. Naloxone is a potentially lifesaving medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose.
