As of Autumn 2020 in France, three-quarters of e-cigarette users declared vaping on a daily basis.
The tobacco epidemic
In France, regular smokers make up around 30 percent of the population, granting the country third place on the European podium.
The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies smoking and tobacco use as an epidemic. Indeed, the nicotine contained in tobacco is highly addictive. Likewise, it is now generally agreed that tobacco use is a chief factor in many diseases and health conditions. As a result, many methods designed to help people give up smoking have been developed in recent years: one of the most widespread ones being vaping.
The rise of electronic cigarettes
As it is still relatively early to draw definitive conclusions, the health effects of e-cigarettes remain somewhat unclear. Nonetheless, considering that the vapor they create contains fewer carcinogens than tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes are likely less harmful than smoking. The general opinion on the topic is, however, not so clear-cut: the potential dangers of e-cigarettes continue to be a polarizing issue among the population.
At any rate, health concerns are not the primary motivation behind the use of e-cigarettes. When asked about the reasons that led them to start vaping, French people agree that they did so to save money, first and foremost. The tobacco industry is indeed a sector generating substantial sums of money.
Currently, nearly half of smokers declare being willing to switch from smoking to vaping, but with cigarette prices ever on the rise, this number could very well increase in the future.
