The results of a survey in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in 2020 about the Arab youth showed that the largest share of Arab youth respondents in the Levant region had an increased financial debt following the COVID-19 outbreak at about 40 percent of Levant respondents. In comparison, only 17 percent of young Arab respondents from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries had a worsened debt situation following the pandemic.

The survey question was as follows:
"Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, has your household's level of debt....?", excluding "Don't know", "Stayed the same", and "My household doesn't have any debt"
The study was conducted in in two parts:
The first part was The Main Survey conducted in 17 countries between January 19 and March 3 2020 before the coronavirus outbreak with a count of 3,400 face-to face interviews, Covered countries were Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Yemen.
Syria and Sudan were recently added to the latest year's version of the survey in 2020. Each country had 200 respondent. Margin of error for this survey was +/-1.7 percent.
The second COVID-19 Pulse Survey between August 18 and 26, 2020 following the COVID-19 crisis with a count of 600 face-to-face and online interviews divided equally between six countries: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Algeria, and Egypt. Margin of error for this survey was +/-4.0 percent.
All respondents were exclusively citizens of their countries and they were 50% male and female.
