In the fiscal year 2020, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan planned to utilize around 58 billion Japanese yen for an emergency aid package supporting sports and cultural activities following the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). About 40.5 billion yen were prepared for the support of schools to reopen with a safe learning environment after the countrywide closing down due to the spread of COVID-19 infections.
Following the accelerated impact of COVID-19, the government announced the second supplementary budget in June 2020 as an addition to the initial annual budget and the first supplementary budget stated by the end of April 2020.
