Working hours lost due to COVID-19 in Northern Africa 2020

In the third quarter of 2020, Northern Africa lost 12.9 percent of its total working hours as an implication for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Compared to both the African and world averages, the region lost more working hours in the second and third quarters of the same year. Moreover, North Africa was most affected in the second quarter with more than a fifth of the hours of work estimated to be lost.

As of November 29, 2020, the region had recorded 747,660 overall cases of the coronavirus, while the casualties in the sub-region added up to 20,451.

They are calculated based on the assumption that decreases in working hours were borne entirely and comprehensively by a group of full-time workers, while the rest of the workers experienced no reduction in working hours
