From October 2019 to March 2020, a series of protests took place across Chile, triggered by the raise in transport fares in capital city Santiago, and related to other underlying social issues, such as high living costs and inequality in the country. In this period, more than 2,500 human rights violation complaints were filed in Chile. The Chilean national police (Carabineros) was the sole reported institution in nearly 93 percent of complaints. Another 97 complaints were filed against the Chilean Army.
