M&A market contribution to Romania's GDP 2019, by sector

In 2019, the M&A market contribution to Romania's GDP amounted to 2.6 percent. Out of the total transactions, M&A deals in the real estate industry had the highest contribution. However, the most appealing sector for transactions in 2020 was Telecom and IT, totaling 20 M&A deals. Moreover, investors and legal or financial advisors believed that technology and IT sectors would remain the most active concerning M&A deals in 2021.

Important factors for a successful M&A deal

According to a study conducted by KMPG among investors, legal and financial experts, and business owners, the most important factor for closing a successful deal was first to build trust between parties. Subsequently, it was considered essential to have a proper management team. Finally, 22 percent of respondents agreed that acquiring market share was a powerful strategic objective for profitable acquisitions in 2021.

Acquisition actors

Nearly five out of ten specialists considered that in 2021 private equity funds were the most likely to complete acquisitions in Romania, followed by international companies present on the Romanian market. The majority of transactions and company expansions were expected to happen either in Romania or in another country from the Central and Eastern European region.
