Estimations illustrated a loss of nearly six million full-time equivalent jobs in East Africa as of the fourth quarter of 2020. The number was calculated based on projections of reductions in working hours, as an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the second quarter of 2020, higher estimates were registered, pointing out a loss of 18 million full-time equivalent jobs. Also in the period, stricter measures to contain the spread of coronavirus were in place, like curfews and the closure of borders and businesses.

(in millions)
Estimated data. Figures refer to full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, which are calculated based on reductions in working hours, considering a workload of 48 hours per week. Values were calculated taking employment levels of the fourth quarter of 2019 as the baseline.
According to the source, "the FTE values are calculated on the assumption that reductions in working hours were borne exclusively and exhaustively by a subset
of full-time workers, and that the rest of workers did not experience any reduction in hours worked".
