Prior to 2020, more than 400 big box distribution centers (40,000 square meters or more) were built or announced in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The development of these so-called "Mega" or "XXL" DCs accelerated in 2018 and 2019, increasing by more than 50 percent compared to 2015-2017. More than half of the big boxes in the three European countries are found in Germany. The growth in the Netherlands, however, is higher than that of Germany's.
