The Asia Pacific region’s investments in renewable energy reached just over 48 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. This was more than double the renewable energy investments made throughout the Asia Pacific region in 2010. However, this value excluded China and Japan. Nevertheless, both countries also invested considerable amounts into their respective renewable energy sectors.
Types of renewable sources
Australia is just one Asia Pacific country famed for its impressive renewable energy sector. Its three leading renewable energy sources that generated the largest amounts of energy were wind, hydropower, and solar. As hydropower is the least costly form of renewable energy to develop, many countries have invested in this type of renewable. China had the largest hydropower capacity globally, while India demonstrated an increasing capacity for solar energy.
Problems with development
Although the renewable energy sector across the Asia Pacific region has expanded dramatically throughout recent years, there are still countries in the region that have not delved completely into renewables. Some countries in the region are somewhat limited by the lack of funding for renewable energy development. Maintaining the renewable energy infrastructure is also costly and requires an efficient grid structure, which some countries in the region cannot provide. Despite the difficulties which renewable energy development poses, most countries throughout the region do, however, have some form of renewable energy system in place.
