The prevalence of heavy episodic drinking (HED) in Latin America and the Caribbean decreased in the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic (March to June 2020), in comparison to 2019, according to a survey carried out in the region. Nevertheless, among those who did experience HED in the period, nearly 91 percent of respondents did not seek for help, up from a share of 87.5 percent in the previous year.

Heavy episodic drinking (HED) is defined by the source as consuming 60+ gramms of pure alcohol on at least one occasion during the 30 days prior to the survey.
The survey was carried out among residents of the 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries that did not travel abroad since March 15, 2020.
