Latin America: prevalence of heavy episodic drinking 2019-2020, by gender

The share of alcohol consumers in Latin America and the Caribbean who experienced heavy episodic drinking in the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic (March to June 2020) decreased in comparison to 2019, according to a survey carried out in the region. This share close to halved for women, going from a prevalence of 43.5 percent in 2019 to 26.6 percent in the period analized in 2020, while for men a decrease of nearly 20 percentage points was registered.

The survey was carried out among residents of the 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries that did not travel abroad since March 15, 2020.
