The number of carbon accredited airports in the Latin America and Caribbean region increased from 2015 to 2020. As of 2020, there were a total of 45 carbon accredited airports in this region. 26 of these airports were level 1 airports, 16 fell under level 2. The Level 3 category had a single airport recorded, and the level 3+ category recorded two airports.

Level 1 requires a policy commitment to emissions reduction endorsed by top management and the development of a carbon footprint for emissions under the airport’s control.
Level 2 requires the fulfilment of all level 1 accreditation requirements, formulation of a carbon emissions reduction target, development of a Carbon Management Plan to achieve the target and annual reduction of
emissions under the airport’s control versus the three-year rolling average.
Level 3 requires fulfilment of all level 2 accreditation requirements, development of a more extensive carbon footprint to include specific scope 3 emissions and the formulation of a Stakeholder Engagement Plan to promote wider airport-based emissions’ reductions.
Level 3+ requires fulfilment of all level 3 accreditation requirements and offsetting of residual emissions under the airport’s control that cannot be reduced.
Level 4 requires a policy commitment to absolute emissions reductions,
development of a more extensive carbon footprint, the formulation of an absolute long-term emissions reduction target, development of a Carbon Management Plan (setting out the trajectory, interim milestones and the measures required to achieve the target), and development of a Stakeholder Partnership Plan to address third party emissions.
Level 4+ requires fulfilment of all level 4 accreditation requirements
